Down in the freezing waters of the North Sea. What’s there to find? NAVA is proud to support a groundbreaking research and discovery project that explores some of the white spaces in naval history. SANTI: FIND “ORZEŁ” is a long-term project aimed at locating the wreck of the most famous Polish submarine from the period of the Second Republic. During the Second World War, ORP “Orzeł” became an underwater grave for sixty three marines, but the place of her eternal rest still remains unknown. The mystery of events that led to her sinking is still to be solved. To find the wreck of the submarine lost over 70 years ago somewhere in the North Sea, and to salute the honours to its crew is the common desire for a group of people of different passions. Four divers, two hydrographers and two historians form the core of our search team. We are supported by photographers and film-makers. Everybody contributes to make the arrangements and overcome all sorts of legal, logistic and technical problems, inevitable in such an audacious undertaking. Despite the diversity of our dispositions and tempers, we play well together, focused on the common ambitious goal. It took us years of preparations before we got ready for the first phase of the search, the North Sea expedition, which took place this spring. Sailing out for search and underwater actions are the most conspicuous crowning tasks of an enormous, invisible and often underestimated work, performed in libraries, archives and museums. To get maximum knowledge, we had carried out dozens of interviews, finding scattered people who could provide us with even tiniest bits of information, which, like jigsaw puzzle pieces, we tried to assemble into coherent hypotheses. Dr Hubert Jando, a passionate historian, who has devoted many years of his life to ask questions and seek the truth about “Orzeł”, inspired our team with relentless enthusiasm. His research work, summarized in a dissertation on probable circumstances of the sinking of the submarine, founded our assumptions to choose the area of the survey. The part of the North Sea, where we decided to search first, corresponds with the thesis that “Orzeł” was sunk inadvertently by British Air Forces. For the first search, performed in May and June, over two tons of scientific equipment had to be delivered and embarked on the research ship in Great Britain. The proper performance of onboard measurements required many months of work, both on maps and at sea. Existing wrecks had to be spotted, identified and compared to the evidence available. Our measurements were supervised by two experienced hydrograpers from the Gdańsk Marine Institute: dr Benedykt Hac and Jarosław Nowak (a.k.a. Kostek), who previously, had lead the research expedition onboard IMOR in 2008. The expedition is not only research. It is an effort to raise funds and to carry out the enormity of everyday mundane work. All for these few thrilling days when we embark on the ship and focus on our pure goal: the search. Our operation supplemented the results of all the previous expeditions, but also shed new light on existing hypotheses about the sinking of “Orzeł”. Although the submarine has not been found among the wrecks tracked, we strongly believe that every new wreck spotted leads us closer to the one we pursue. At present we focus on two goals: to make our ideas generally well-known and to restore to memory the Polish brave marines. These are the aims of our website. We want it to be attractive both to the experts as well as to everyone who wants to get some information about “Orzeł” and her history. We strongly encourage anyone who can contribute to our store of knowledge, to be active. We kindly appeal to family members of the crew to share their stories or photos, as well as letters perhaps. We would like to reconstruct biographies of every crew member of “Orzeł”. Everyone interested is welcome to discuss and share their ideas on our website. At the same time, we are still collecting information which should be a basis for our next North Sea expedition, in Spring 2017. Whether the wreck is found or not, we are deeply convinced that the history of ORP “Orzeł” and her brave, resolute crew is worth saving from oblivion.
